Angeles City celebrates victory over the Mt. Pinatubo eruption

With the theme “Turning Tragedy into Triumph,” the Angeles City Tourism Office (ACTO) has prepared a number of activities for the commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption.

Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan leads the celebration of the life after the widespread destruction caused by Mt. Pinatubo eruption with activities aimed at highlighting the city’s ability to rise after the disastrous calamity.

Mayor Pamintuan, who was also the mayor of Angeles City at the time of the Pinatubo eruption, said in the face of great and seeming insurmountable calamity, the Angeleños indomitable spirit surfaced and surpassed the challenges, and did much better than expected.

A week-long celebration has been scheduled by the ACTO, The line-up of activities kick-off on June 4 with “Padyak Para sa Pag-Bangon,” a bike run around the city, followed by a fun run dubbed “Takbo para sa Pag-kakaisa” on June 5.

Both events will start at SM City Clark at 5:00 a.m. for the bike run and 5:30 a.m. for the fun run.

An “On-the-Spot Poster-Making Contest” and “Painting Contest” is scheduled on June 14, also at SM City Clark, where artists, young and old, from all around the city will compete.

On June 15, there will be a ceremonial groundbreaking for the commemorative “Phoenix Monument” to be installed at the Marquee/North Luzon Expressway rotunda in Barangay Pulung Maragul. Mayor Pamintuan likened the city the phoenix bird that victoriously rose from the ashes of destructions.

This will be followed by several events such as the “La Heart and La Art Competition,” photo and video exhibit and book launching at the Marquee Mall.

A job fair which offers local and overseas employment opportunities for job seekers will take place at Robinson’s Place – Angeles on the same day.

In the afternoon, an array of activities will also take place at SM City Clark, like cultural presentations, photo and video exhibits and the unveiling of the “Phoenix Replica.”

The Museo ning Angeles would also have its share of commemorative activities and presentations at 6:00pm of the same day.

An “On-the-Spot Essay Writing Contest” is scheduled on June 16 at the SM City Clark Training room to test the writing prowess of different students from schools in the city. Then, on June 17, there would be a “Rap and Dance Competition and Performance Contest” also at SM City Clark.

Finally, the city will have its culminating activity on June 18 which will feature the inauguration of Ospital Ning Angeles’ Renal Care Unit at 10:00 in the morning.

This will be followed by an awarding ceremony and mini-concert featuring Noel Cabangon at the SM City Clark Entrance from 6:00 until 9:00 in the evening.
